Bus / Life Learning Week 13

Another month is nearly over, and the count down is on for us to leave our lovely little motor camp.
We will miss the quiet and the lovely people we have made friends with here, but look forward to the next part of the adventure we call life :)

Monday 28th July 2014

Miss Personality asked to try a day with a blind fold on, to see how people get around when they can not see, but use her other senses to get around.
She stated that if she went outside though, she wouldn't be able to do it, in case she walked in to things and got hurts.
I asked the question " Well then how do blind people get around out side?".
After some thinking and verbalizing her thoughts, she came up with, a stick, a seeing eye dog, and she remembered the bumps on the road at some pedestrian crossings and at traffic lights.

Later Miss Personality asked me if Weetbix is good for you.
I said it depends on how you look at it.
I explained to her that I have been trying to stick to a Low Carb High Fat way of eating (which is hard in a house where everyone else is eating regular food), and by following that way of eating, wheat and sugar and high processed foods are not good for you.
I asked her if she would like to do an experiment of, one day eating as much processed, sugary food as she liked, and recording at the end of the day how she felt.
Then the next day choosing foods that had no sugar, not processed and recording at the end of the day how she felt and then compare the information.
She was pretty keen to give it a go, so I said at next pay day she could give it a try.

Packed the car to go to grandma's to do some washing, and make use of some of her internet :)

On the drive there, we had an interesting conversation about mountains and volcanoes.
Is Mount Maunganui a volcano?
If it is, is it a sleeping one?
What if would look like, what would happen if White Island erupted?
What causes a volcano to erupt?
Then we each took turns discussing our own theories on the answers to each question.
Think we may need to do some research on volcanoes :)

Miss Personality made herself toast for lunch.
She enjoyed catching up on television programs on grandma's tv while we were there.
Then before we knew it, it was time to go to Musical Theatre lessons.

Miss Personality does this test with dad at bed time.
She reads him a story, and to make sure he is listening, she will ask him questions about the book, that he has to answer. She loves it :)

Tuesday 29th July 2014
Miss Personality and I just love to loom.
We do it as often as we can.
This morning was no different, and while she was still in her pajamas, she decided to make a minecraft pick axe, sword without a tutorial, making it up as she went along.

Friends of ours has bought a mexican restaurant in town.
When he came around in his rather impressive Impala, and saw all the things we have been making with loom bands. He challenged Miss Personality to make him a replica of his car out of loom bands.
She was a little concerned with the challenge as there are no tutorials for that kind of thing on You Tube.
But today she decided to make a start on it, by making some wheels.

Later on she saw her little friend, the caretakers son and daughter, outside playing.
In record time, she got dressed, did all her personal jobs, and wasn't even interested in breakfast, and went outside to play with him.
Miss Personality has missed her friends, as they and their family have been in Canada for the last month.

Later we decided to go to the local dvd rental shop, to join up and hire some dvd's.
It works out cheaper than the library. Library is $3.50 per dvd for 2 weeks. Dvd shop on a Tuesday & Thursday all weekly dvd's are a $1 to hire for a week.

Unfortunately Miss Personality shut the tip of her thumb in the car door, just as we were getting out of the car.
She was upset but nothing, major, and I try to not over react when accidents happen and just focus on dealing with it, if that makes any sense.
Any way she came over to me, and showed me her thumb and by this stage is was really throbbing.
Luckily we were parked next to a Vet's, so we went in, explained what had happened and asked if Miss Personality could run the thumb under the cold tap.
Miss Personality was trying so hard to be brave, but I could tell she was in a lot of pain.
In what felt like 2 seconds her thumb nail had gone dark purple/ black.
At the Vet's they gave us some ice to put on it, but Miss was in pain.
So just to be on the safe side we rang the doctors and got is checked out.
By the time we got there (30 minutes away), Miss had calmed down a bit, but could tell it really hurt.
When the nurse had a look at it, she said that it wasn't broken, just badly bruised with a blood blister under the nail.
The doctor came and had a look and said they may need to heat a paper clip, and place it on the nail to burn a hole through it to pop the blister to release the pressure. Miss Personality was not keen on that being done, so we decided to go home, and if it got to sore with pressure build up, then we would bring her back to get it looked at.

After dinner Miss Personality decided her thumb was alright to go and have a soak in the camping grounds hot pools with mum and dad.
Was a nice way to finish off the day.

Wednesday 30th July 2014

Miss Personality was concerned with doing any writing and things, with her thumb still being very swollen.
So she started off the day watching dvd's - Teen Beach Movie and Oz The Great and Powerful.

Also watched the dvd Volcano.

I thought this would be a good movie to watch with Miss Personality to show her what would happen if a volcano erupted. It also opened up topics of conversation about all the important people who work together to run a city and how they all work together in an emergency.
Lets just say the pause button got used a lot, so I could try and answer the many questions that Miss had to ask :)

Miss Personality asked to watch dvd Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

Later Miss Personality spotted her friend outside, so she took off to go play with him.
She ended up coming back later and asked if they could set up a blanket with her loom band stuff, as her friend wanted her to show him how to make a few different bracelets.

Since a big rain cloud rolled on in and disrupted there looming, Miss came back inside and watched some more dvd's as she said her thumb was still way to sore to do too much of anything.

At bed time, she read some more stories to dad, so that she could test him on it afterwards.

Thursday 31st July 2014

Started off our day with some more loom banding.
Since the tutorials are all saved on mum's laptop, if we want to do something different, something we don't know how to make, we either have to take turns or choose something to do together.
This morning we decided to make Thor.
Miss Personality then decided to have breakfast, do her personal jobs, so we could go to the hairdressers as mum was getting her lovely silver streaks hidden :)
We turned up to hair salon, only to be told that mum needed to do a skin test 24hrs before a colour could be done.
So oh well, had to re schedule, decided to go to supermarket instead and do our weekly shopping.
Miss Personality is awesome at pushing around the supermarket trolley.
Making sure she doesn't bump into anyone, but following around mum so she can put everything we need into the trolley.
The other highlight of this trip, is getting to put all our items onto the conveyor belt for the checkout operator to scan.
Little does she know that one day, when she is in a home of her own, she will do this every time she goes to the supermarket, and it will no longer be exciting :)
But for now, as long as she is excited to do it, she is welcome to it :)

When we got home and unpacked the groceries.
We had an impromptu discussion on when a product is worthy of being returned to the supermarket, due to being too expensive.
Mum has been trying to do more baking with things like coconut flour and almond flour.
I discovered that almond flour or ground almonds as it were, was being sold in the bulk bins at the supermarket.
I decided to stock up and got 2 large bags of it, but when I got home and saw that these 2 bags cost $80 all on their own, I decided a quick trip back to the supermarket, was in order to return the ground almond and get my money back,OMG!

At 3pm we had to meet dad at his work and then follow him to Tauriko as we were selling our little car.
It had got to the point, when we took if for a Warrant Of Fitness, that it was going to cost more than the car was worth to get it road legal again. That it was time to sell it.
We will miss it, but the extra cash in our pockets each week, will be nice.
Just have to use the public bus more often :)

Friday 1st August 2014

Watched an episode of The Magic School Bus on volcanoes - Blows It's Top, while eating breakfast.

Watched a short movie off You Tube.
Since we don't have endless amounts of internet access on the bus.
I have found this website that lets you download clips off You Tube, to your laptop, so you can watch them at a later time.
I have found this great for so many things.
If you would like to use it, here is the link:

10 Most Active Volcanoes in the World.
Geography Lesson - What is a volcano?
Formation of volcanic islands.
Learn about planet earth -Plate Tectonics.
How volcanoes work.
White Island volcano erupts August 20 2013
Volcano processes/animaiton.
Volcanoes and Earthquakes - Inside the volcano.

Most of these clips were short of about 3 to 5/6 minutes, which is great for short attention spans.
I tried to push it with the last one on that list, it was more an educational documentary, and it went for over an hour.
Miss Personality got bored after 30min and asked to do something else.
Oh well it was worth a try.

Dad rang with some shocking news about his health.
It lead to us digging out the human body books and discussing the pancreas and what it does for the human body. What the repercussions will be for dad, if they remove it.
What is diabetes?

So we had some high's and low's this week and have started learning about volcanoes, all through Miss Personality's interest in them.
I will do another blog post just on volcanoes, so if anyone is interested, then can have a read on what we end up doing.
Another month has ended and a new one has started.
Before we now it, it will be Christmas time again.
