Bus / Life Learning Week Six

17th June 2014

Sorry about the delay in posting for last week.
The perks of living in a bus with limited internet access :)

What a week though.
To say we had a lot of rain was a bit of an understatement.
We had 3-4 days of absolute down pour.
As you can imagine, Miss Personality was not seen for dust (lol), by the time the rain did eventually stop.
As she was off to explore all the places she hadn't been able to because of the rain and to catch up with the friends she has made around the place.

Monday 9th June 2014
Miss Personaltiy started off her day by reading Minecraft for Beginners by David Oconner, while eating her breakfast.

I talked with Miss Personality about doing some sort of writing every day.
I asked her to come up with a list of things she would be interested in doing, so when she was stuck for ideas, she could refresh her memory and check out her list.

I also got her to come up with a list of things of interest to her, that she might like to learn more about.
Even though she typed out these lists, it still covers doing some form of writing.
I want to encourage her to do more, as I feel she needs more practicing with actual hand writing.
I know she struggles with it as she struggles with spelling.
She likes to type out things because she has the help of spell check to help her with words.
Which is alright to use sometimes, but not always.

We watched an episode of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
Went for a walk to the dairy and back.
Miss Personality peeled some potatoes for her lunch. She loves potato and gravy, the only catch is if she wants it, she has to peel the potatoes :)
Watched a couple more episodes of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
It brought up topics of conversation on men's & women's expected roles back then.
Women cooked - a boy in the episode wanted to enter a pie baking contest and got teased as only women and girls cooked.
Only men were allowed to compete in a horse race - Dr Quinn was not allowed to compete in the horse race, but she disguised herself as a man and did it any way and won the race, but was still not allowed to have the prize money.
I introduced her to the words prejudice, racism and sexism and what they meant.
Miss Personality then had Musical Theatre Lesson.
She absolutely loves this and we have been told by her teacher that she really enjoys it and is catching on really quickly to all the new songs and dance routines they are learning.

Tuesday 10th June 2014
Watched another episode of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
As you can tell we watch alot of this at the moment.
It is more mum's interest than Miss Personality's, but she seems to like joining me when I watch it.
She loves to ask lots of questions, and I find the show brings up lots of interesting topics of discussion.

Miss Personality drew some pictures on the fridge.
We like to use the fridge as a whiteboard sometimes.
As long as you have whiteboard pens, it comes of pretty easy with some spray and wipe.

Later on she was inspired by her pictures she had drawn to add a story to go with it.
She did and awesome job with her spelling. Some words she was determined to spell on her own.
She would write them, then have a look at whether it looked right. She does alot of reading and can identify a lot of words by seeing them, but struggles a little with the sounds of the letters, either by themselves or in groups.
She used the magnetized words I bought from Whitcoulls a while ago. She also used her 'Spell-Write' dictionary. Then if she still couldn't get it, she asked mum for some help.
After she had finished, I asked her if there was anything else she could see that might need changing.
Then mentioned a few reminders in regards to capitals and things.
Awesome effort though, considering she is not a fan of writing at all.

Miss Personality has mentioned a lot about when things happened in time ( history) and comparing them with when other things have happened in time (history).
So I made up a time line for her, so when she found out interesting facts to do with dates in history, she could see them on her time line.
She then used the internet on my iphone to see what period in history was the Little House on the Prairie and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. Then wrote them on the time line in the correct place.
Miss Personality will keep adding things of interest to her, over the rest of the year.
Will be interesting to look back on at the end of the year.

Wednesday 11th June 2014
As it had been raining all week, we used the opportunity to visit our local library to get out of the bus for a while, as well us to get books that had been reserved.
While we were there, Miss Personality reminded me that we needed to look for the DVD Breaking Dawn part two. This is the last movie in the Twilight series and she was very keen to watch the last one.
Miss Personality could not find the DVD on the shelf, so went off to find a librarian to help her reserve a copy :)

When we got home, we stopped at a bakery down the road to buy something for lunch.
We also looked at their DVD selection. The bought dvd's from an old dvd shop that closed down and are selling them for $2.50 to $3.50.
Miss Personality was very excited when we found a copy of Breaking Dawn part two, to add to our collection.
For those of you who have watched the movies and know there are a couple bedroom scenes
that are not really for her age group. I just fast forwarded past those bits with the explanation that, that is what people do when they are married and she didn't really need to see those bits. Miss Personality was happy with that explanation. These scenes are not super graffic, but enough to suggest what they are up too.
Any way, of course when we got home, we had to watch it.
Miss Personality then went through, probably what many fans ( of the books and the movies) went through, the feeling that there was no more, the end of the story line.

I introduced to Miss Personality the joy of reading the pick a path books.
She couldn't get her head around the fact that you could chose your own story and go back and re read the book and get a different story.
So I read it to her, asking her which choice she wanted to make as we went through the book.
She must have really enjoyed it, because when Miss Blondini came to stay on the weekend, she was telling her all about it.

Miss Personality read a book to mum. Scooby-Doo readers, The Big Bad Blizzard by Gail Herman.

We found a dvd at the library called Kid Detectives Season One.
In each episode learn how to assess and reconstruct a crime scene, collate evidence and analyse clues and then eliminate suspects from the investigation.
Miss Personality made me giggle as she kept coming out say "did you know" facts that she had learnt.
She also found out some interesting dates for when the first light bulb was made, first phone and first camera were made.

Thursday 12th June 2014
Watched a couple more episodes of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
One was on a teacher who used physical punishment to discipline the children at school.
One was on indians who killed army soliders.

Miss Personality found some Garfield comics at the library.
She is really enjoying reading them.

Miss Personality wrote down a question she would like to find the answer for and add to her time line.
What year did Neil Armstrong land on the moon?

She watched some more of her Kid Detectives DVD.
Her 'Did you know' facts were:
You use 29 facial muscles when you kiss.
The largest beetle in the world is called the goliath beetle and it lives in the African forest and eats fruit and tree sap.

When dad came home, she excitedly shared with him, while we were eating dinner, the new things she had learnt.

She had a game of scrabble on the ipad with dad before bed.

Friday 13th June 2014
Miss Personality observed that 2 chrysalis on the swan plant were black, which meant they could hatch at any stage.
She then washed the dishes after we had all had breakfast.

I asked Miss Personality if she would like to make some jelly today and put it in the jelly molds we had bought the other day.
She was very keen  and happily read the instructions on the packet of jelly. Boiled the jug on the gas stove, lighting the element safely.
Poured the jelly crystals into a bowl, measured the hot water and poured it into the bowl, stirred.
We talked about how it went from crystal form in the packet, to liquid in the bowl with hot water, and then it would turn into a solid in the fridge.

I then did some revision/ practice with Miss Personality, using the flash cards I have on money and reading the time. She did very well, as I knew she would.

She read some pages of her Garfield comic.

No rain today and the sun was out, which meant Miss Personality could venture off outside today :)
Miss Personality spotted her friend Helen (motor camp staff member).
After she had done all her jobs she needed to do, she asked if she could go off and see if she could help Helen with anything. I said yes, so off she went.
Later she came and got me so she could show me what she had been doing.
She had been doing some weeding and planting in the gardens.
Helen told me she is a very hard worker as a lot of other children would have given up a long time a go.
Miss Personality was very proud of herself and her efforts :)

Then on the weekend she got to have her big sister come stay, grandma & grandad visit.
She had a fun time and we all played bat down together.
Later she decided she would like some time by herself, so created a lovely spot with her books and her teddies.
